Blog interrupted again

Once again this blog is hit by events mostly beyond the blogger's control. For more go to the other blog. I will be back soon. Till then, do visit HT's excellent Mumbai Project. Just for the whole lot of information and data, it's a must-visit. While it's good that they're running it on their website, I don't know why they're not carrying their daily pieces.

Hi BA,

I have been seeing the HT coverage and thinking about your blog in context. The HT campaign seems it is a great idea on paper (pun unintentional) and as you have said.good collection of facts, information and data. Maybe due to other things going on in my life and not HT, but for some reason the "campaign" has not so far, managed to grip my heart or for that matter, anyone else I know.

Land is being sold for crores, deals are being made, people are buying jets and donald trump like towers, ministers are talking of new projects when old ones have stagnated etc.

The common man, as depicted by R K Laxman, in Mumbai has got kinda, "desensitised" to the events around- he/she is a "dukhee prani". Life goes on. So do we.

Deepa - I've not seen such coverage from any of the newspapers, and I think it's much better than the stuff that gets dished out to us in the papers. To that extent, it's a great initiative. Rest all, I agree. Life goes on. Thanks for the comment.

Coverage..hmmmm..I was not aware that was the point so I did not really think or make comparisons so I do not wish to argue the point. Anyway, due to your post I clicked on the site/blog and posted my five points comment there. Some key words have been "edited" by HT. In point 1, the word "ALL" qualifying railway stations has been removed (why? Are some railway stations special zones of the local MLA?). In point 2, the words " RTO and drivers of trucks, tempos, tankers" for illegal parking has been deleted (which means only cars/middle class get fined). Rest 3 points have not been changed.

Is it that corruption as a topic is something everyone wants to believe- Ignore and it will go away.

Citizens are posting on what affects them in daily life. Interesting, waterfront chodo, raste ka haal bolo. Hopefully the messages will be heard.

Meanwhile,I found this-chk what it says abt.Mumbai.Lovely. Only for millionaires.

Pls. see Pg. 3 of HT dated 27/11. Title- Who moved your flyover. by line says, legislator "coaxes" planning body to move flyover. 120 ft wide link now 80 ft. Coaxes? Coaxes??? hah. So much for editorial privilege and ..what was the word-coverage. The Mumbai project is a goodshowcase for HT to may be submit/win some international journalism prize. Not really for the city or citizens.

Deepa - By coverage, I meant two centrefold pages dedicated everyday, with data, information and views, on Mumbai's infrastructure. Sad that they edited your comment. Thanks again for the visit.

Anon - I don't see how the word "coaxes" changes the Mumbai Project coverage. They might have pulled their punches, but that's a separate issue. Thanks for the comment.

I agree. Two pages covered with all that. Technically you are right. lotsa information- nice. But isn't that what a newspaper is meant for? That is why some of use changed from the monopoly of TOI and their full page ads. Also in two pages-some loonngg photos of bridges and trains. Some juxtaposed ones, some like this, like that. With little little boxes of "facts" all bordering the page (What is the % of text to picture, would you know?). Then maybe they ran out of copy/paste from blogs? Please don't get me wrong. The intention and covering is good. But when I see them reporting hat "intellectuals" write letter as a "last ditch attempt" to CM, I am this close to bursting a blood vessel in my head. Aree, names like sukhtankar, ribeiro, naseer munjee etc have to "entreat" , then hum aaam addmi ki kya majaal. It makes me feel stupid that in my building a few handful sharmas, guptas and iyers are writing letters after letter for just one road work completion. Hence hopefully you will understand when I say, the whole thing just makes me nauseaous. And I am left wondering why my paper enjoys making me feel stupid and nauseous instead of helping me solve issues. Thanks!
